“My daughter (age 9) has been learning flute and piano from Sujatha for the last several months and she loves her lessons! She looks forward to seeing Sujatha every week and doesn't even complain about practicing :) Sujatha is very kind and patient and has a wonderful energy that my daughter responds to. She seems to really enjoy teaching, which makes all the difference. She also invited us to her recent concert so we got to hear her play and my daughter loved it and was very inspired! I highly recommend Sujatha.”

“I'd always wanted to be able to play the piano, and retirement offered me the time to pursue that. I can't believe how much I've learned in these few months with Sujatha. She is fun, patient, creative, supportive, and knowledgable. Sujatha is also a great musician by herself. Her lessons are very detailed and fun. She has incredible patience and is attentive to my strength and weakness, and she knows how to motivate me with constructive feedback. She can explain very challenging concepts in plain language. I also appreciate Sujatha to be always flexible when I need to re-schedule my lesson. The lesson hour flies by like nothing and we always have time for a laugh. I highly recommend Sujatha.”

“We are so happy that we found Sujatha. Her warm, patient teaching style works great for our 8yo. She has a good sense of humor, which is definitely a plus when working with our strong-willed and creative kiddo. And she communicates well with the parents, too :) Sujatha is an accomplished musician who can meet kids on their level --and inspires them to keep on learning!”

Sujatha is a flutist and composer whose musical exploration began with the piano at the age of 7. In her early 20s she studied with renowned flutist Paula Robison at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she earned a Bachelor of Music in Classical Flute Performance.
Years later she discovered her voice as an improvisational artist. A child of Indian immigrants, she was immersed in the sounds of Indian music from a young age, which has greatly influenced the way she hears and relates to music. She now blends a variety of sounds and forms in her unique style.
In 2024 she released her second album of original compositions and improvisations entitled The Great Intimacy, produced by Christopher Krotky. Sujatha also performs regularly with her world music trio Transparent Radiance in and around the Bay Area, California.
As a music instructor and creative mentor, Sujatha works with adults and children ages 7 and up.  She teaches flute, piano, improvisation, composition. Her approach focuses on drawing out the student’s innate creativity as she guides them to follow the joyful flow of artistic movement. She loves working with beginners who are just picking up an instrument for the first time, with seasoned musicians who are desiring to deepen their craft, and with students at all skill levels who love playing music. Sujatha tunes into each student’s musical interests and passions and guides them to be able to express themselves through music. During this process, students will learn the foundations of the instrument, how to read and interpret music, and how to work with scales and chords to compose and improvise their own music.

Sujatha teaches in Berkeley, California. To learn more about music lessons with Sujatha, send her a message via the contact page or email her at music@sujathamaheshwari.com or call 510 501 2214.
